Your children are not your children

"Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you..."

-Khalil Gibran

Guess those pregnancy hormones must be kicking in because this poem made me a bit weepy. :-)

It was nice to meet you at Borders a few weeks ago.

The Gibran that you quote tugs at my heartstrings, and has ever since I read it in a book on my dad's bookshelf as a teen -- long before I really contemplated becoming a mother. I have it recorded by Sweet Honey in the Rock as a kind of gospel chant, and it's incredibly powerful.

I hope the pregnancy continues to go smoothly!
